Rockhampton Northern Access Upgrade
The Rockhampton Northern Access Upgrade focus was to address safety and capacity issues identified on the Bruce Highway approximately 7km north of the centre of Rockhampton. The need for the project was identified in the Bruce Highway Action Plan 2012.

Our Project Mission

The Rockhampton Northern Access Road (RNAU) project involved upgrading the Bruce Highway in Parkhurst (Rockhampton) between the Yeppoon Road Intersection and Ramsay Creek to provide dual two-lane carriageways together with intersection and access upgrades. In addition, service roads and modifications to existing local access roads were undertaken to improve functionality and access to the highway.
Our Approach
HIG were engaged as a subconsultant to AECOM to perform and deliver the detailed design of the project signals and lighting. HIG was awarded the project and subsequently agreed to five variations.
The project extents were 3.9km apart and included 17 intersection/private entrances between them. All electrical infrastructure equipment was selected to be standard items compliant with the relevant design standards.
One innovation made on the project lighting design, was that of providing half design luminance for a section of roadway between two intersections that were close together. This section between the intersections was then illuminance based in order to provide a more consistent approach between the Yeppoon Road and Boundary Road intersections.
This scenario was not addressed in the AS1158 standards, but was the chosen approach by the TMR design leads. This approach was developed and agreed upon during discussions at the 85% delivery stage.
The Result
The project ended in August 2018. At the end of the design stage we were sub-consulted by AECOM for services relating to construction support for the RNAU construction phase, continuing a strong relationship.
